Copenhagen here I come! … and New York next week.
Friday, May 30, 2008, 02:54 PM
Yo!
Just sent in the latest Love Hurts, number 16. My inking has really taken a dramatic turn since the Kung-Fu episode I did some months ago. But it's all good.
Here's a sample page as usual:

Tomorrow I'm going to Komiks.dk, a kick-ass comics festival in Copenhagen. I'll catch up with my mentor Peter Snejbjerg and ask for a autograph from Duncan Fegredo, a great influence on my comics who's gonna be there. Other than that, drink lots of Danish beer and go to Palle Schmidt's release party for his new album Blodets Konkubine.

And next week it's Mocca, Comics Festival, in NYC! I'll be there with friends and colleagues, C'est Bon and Jan Bielecki. It's gonna be a blast! The big apple! Can't wait…

When I get back home it's back to making Love Hurts, I have some really cool scripts I want to draw. A warewolf-story, finally!

The Ice Queen…
Saturday, May 3, 2008, 01:11 PM
Hi everybody!
Just finished the latest Love Hurts-episode, number 15 it is. And with the Halloween-special that's 16, just over 70 pages in total. We're talking about collecting them all in a book, wouldn't that be super cool?

The latest episode takes place in the ice rink of the Ice Dance World Tournament. There's just so much passion in Ice Dance and they have so sharp and shiny blades under their feet, perfect for Love Hurts.

Here's a sample. I wish I could show you the gory bits but that would give away the story.

I've come quite a bit on the script for my graphic novel too. I can't wait to start drawing it, it'll be something quite special. I am aiming for a 150 pages, full of romance and horror.

From the other side…

Soooo… here's a sample page from the latest Love Hurts, as always. It has the bloodiest ending so far. I was actually surprised that my editor let it through without any comments.

I've already started with the next one. It takes place in the ice rink, two gorgeous ice dancers lovers quarrel. You shouldn't mess with anyone who's got a sharp blade under each foot.

I've also started to write a graphic novel. It's going really well and I can't wait to start drawing it. It's a horror story, that's all I can say right now. But as it progresses I'll post more about it.

Kung-fu fighting!
Monday, February 4, 2008, 09:32 PM
Aight!
Here's a sample from the latest Love Hurts, Kung-fu theme. I've inked in a different style, which I'm very excited about. I think this style works better for action comics like this one. There's a lot of fighting in it, but I guess you'll have to read it to see ;D

Last week I was in Angoulême, France, for the International Comics Festival, www.bdangouleme.com. That was awesome! Very inspiring, I just couldn't wait to go home and make new comics. But the great weather and French food kept me there all week. I was there with super talented comic artist Naomi Nowak, www.naomi.se. Be sure to check her stuff out!

Long time, no update…
Saturday, January 5, 2008, 02:35 PM
It's been a while, sorry about that. Guess I've been busy.
So what has happened lately?
I finished the comic with the dragon that I mentioned in the last entry.
Here is a sample, a double page spread!

And now I'm working on the next Love Hurts, lucky number 13.
After watching a lot of Chinese kung fu-movies lately, I couldn't help but to do a kung fu-Love Hurts. And it will be the best one ever!
I'm gonna put up some sketches and stuff when I have the time.

Add some colour to that…

So… here is the latest Love Hurts in colour.
I put up the first page as well as the second, which you have seen before.
Just because it turned out so well ;D

I'm already doing the next one. It has a double page spread with a kick-ass dragon in it! Sounds good, huh?

Update…

A'ight!
Love Hurts: Anastasia has been out for a few weeks now and I've got some great response. Thanks a lot for your beautiful e-mails, they really make me want to keep doing these comics for ever.

Right now I'm working on the next Love Hurts, number eleven. It takes place in Tokyo and it might just be the best one yet. I'm just starting to colour it. Here are some samples…

First a thumbnail sketch to try the layout.

Pencils in nice blue.
And before the ink I show it to my mentor, Peter Snejbjerg, to get some pointers.

Finally, Ink. Well then there's colour as well, but I haven't done that yet.

Cover story

In a few weeks my Halloween-special, Love Hurts: Anastasia, will be out with the Halloween issue of Nemi. I've shown some pages from it and now I want to show you the cover of it. And not just the cover, but the making of the cover. I'll show you step by step how I drew and coloured it.

First of all I went to Gimle in Copenhagen, where my mentor Peter Snejbjerg's sits. I work really well there and I can get pointers and tips from Peter and the other artists at the studion.

First some idea sketches. I wanted it to show something from the story, but not a give away. I decided on a picture of the main character, Anastasia, floating in water and a cat looking down at her from the seashore.

I tried a lot of different versions but I had a problem getting the cat to be visible enough. Of course Peter came up with the brilliant idea that the cat is to be shown as a reflection in the water. That way I could show the face of both the cat and Anastasia clearly.

Then it was time to find some reference pictures.

I found this picture of Ophelia by John Everett Millais quickly. I think I might have had it unconsciously in mind when I first thought about the cover. It's really cool.

These are some other artists versions of this heartbreaking scene from Shakespear's Hamlet. All great for reference.

Those and a good picture of a cat and I was good to go!

First I did a drawing in original size. To get the composition right.
Then enlarged 150% it and drew it nicely.

I draw with a blue pencil that the scanner doesn't pick up. So when it's inked and I scan it only the black goes into the computer.

I inked it with a sable brush, just as I ink my comics.
Anastasia was going to be upside down on the cover, but when I drew and inked her face I turned the paper upside down. Just to make it a bit easier.

Time to scan it and start colouring. So I went back to Sweden to my own studio to use my computer.

First I separated the parts of the picture that where going to be under the water, above the water or reflected in the water.

Gave every part it's colour.

I drew the highlights in the water in photoshop.

I put it upside down here as well to get a better feel for here face when I did some of the shadows and highlights.

Finally I tweaked the colours a bit. And gave it some light effects for that eerie feeling.

A title on top of that and it's done!

So, that's it! That's how I make a cover, and it turned out quite nicely if I may say so myself. Don't forget to pick up the comic book when it's out in the stores.
